Text is in German. "Ost und West" was a revolutionary publication. Among the many important achievements of "Ost und West" was the translation of Modern Yiddish literature into German and in general the presentation of a serious version of Eastern European culture to the West. It was the first periodical to feature illustrations of contemporary Jewish art. E.M. Lilien's association was essential. An entire book by David Brenner, "Marketing Identities. The Invention of Jewish Ethnicity in “Ost und West”" describes the achievements of the magazine better than I am able.
